Dovray

Dovray is located in Southwest Minnesota on the eastern side of Murray County. It is five minutes from Currie, Minnesota, fifteen minutes from Lake Shetek State Park, and it is twenty minutes northeast of Slayton, Minnesota.

The first settlers in the area came from Dovre, Gudbrandsdalen in Norway, and, when the township and the town were organized, it was named Dovray. Today, the Norwegian traditions continue in the town’s celebration of Uffda Day, which is held every even numbered year.

The unique historical fact about Dovray is that in 1904 the town site was moved to be closer to the railroad line. Originally, the town was one mile northand one mile east of the present location. The town flourished until 1916 when the “big fire” destroyed many of the buildings.

This small agricultural town has a population of 58. Community spirit and involvement can be seen in the volunteers of the fire department and members of the Booster Club. Dovray has Northwest Natural Gas hook ups and Red Rock Rural Water System.

Both a German Lutheran and a Norwegian Lutheran church served Dovray at one time. As the German congregation declined in number, they eventually disbanded with their members joining neighboring German congregations or the Norwegian congregation in Dovray.

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church has been a member of the American Lutheran Church since 1960. In 1963, Willow Lake Lutheran Church of Shetek Township joined with the Dovray congregation to become one parish.

The Dovray City park has a lighted softball field, tennis court, and playground equipment. Dovray is only minutes away from Lake Shetek, Buffalo Lake, and numerous wildlife areas where you can go hunting, fishing, boating, or just enjoy the outdoors.
