Holly Township History
Organized July 2, 1872
Holly was the first township in Murray County to be organized. The name was chosen to honor, John Z. Holly, one of the early pioneers. A few years later, Mr. Holly moved to Illinois.
Holly is located on the northeastern corner of Murray County, with Cottonwood County located on its east border, Redwood County on the north, Dovray Township on the south, and Shetek Township on the west. Plum Creek, which rises in Holly Township, is recognized nationwide as the stream on which “Pa” Ingalls chose to settle with his family. The Little House books of Laura Ingalls Wilder pictures the life of the ideal pioneer child, to young readers still today.
Kelly post office was located on the township section line of 29 and 20. Even today, you can find the name “Kelley” on some maps.
